John’s Story:
Finding Purpose Through Work
For John, having the opportunity to work has brought a new sense of purpose, confidence, and enjoyment to his week.
John works two days a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, helping with the preparation and delivery of fresh produce to customers in the community. His role includes preparing boxes, travelling in the delivery van, meeting customers, and helping deliver orders to local homes.
The opportunity came about through a connection made while vegetables were being delivered to John’s home. After learning that John was interested in working and contributing to his community, the business owner decided to offer him an opportunity.
John was introduced to customers as he joined the delivery rounds, and the response was immediately positive. Customers enjoyed meeting him and were pleased to see him gaining valuable workplace experience.
Over time, John has become increasingly comfortable and confident in his role. He looks forward to his workdays and often arrives full of enthusiasm, ready to get started.
His family have also noticed the difference the role has made.
After one shift, John proudly announced that he had been to work. He had spent the day preparing boxes of vegetables and helping with deliveries—and he had loved every minute of it.
For John’s mother, seeing him happy and proud of his work has been incredibly meaningful. Approaching his 50th birthday, this was a new experience for John and an opportunity he had been hoping for over many years.
The experience has also had a positive impact on the people working alongside him.
John brings a sense of calm and perspective to the workplace. His presence is a reminder to slow down, take a breath, and appreciate the importance of connection, inclusion, and community.
While creating meaningful employment opportunities can sometimes require additional time, flexibility, and support, the benefits are significant. For John, it has meant greater independence, social connection, confidence, and a valued role within his community.
