Val’s Story:
Seeing John Thrive
As John’s mother, Val has seen a big change in his life since he began receiving support from SILC.
Over the past couple of years, John’s days have become busier, more social and filled with new experiences. Val describes him simply as a “very happy chappy.”
John lives with flatmates and enjoys having a home and routine of his own, while still maintaining a close conn
ection with his family. When Val asks if he would like to come home for the week
end, John is usually quick to say yes. He settles straight back into family life, relaxes, takes over the television and enjoys being at home before returning to his usual routine.
John has always enjoyed travelling and spending time with family. Over the years he has travelled around the South Island and further afield. More recently, John joined Val and other family members on a trip to the Gold Coast, enjoying theme parks, night markets and walks along the beach.
John also has a busy social life. He has made friendships, enjoys going to the cinema and discos, and takes part in a range of outings and activities.
Going to church has also become an important part of John’s week. It was something John had wanted to do, and he now attends most Sundays. He enjoys socialising with the people there and sometimes stays afterwards for lunch. Most importantly for Val, it was John’s choice, and it is something he enjoys.
Looking back over the last couple of years, Val has seen John experience more opportunities in a relatively short time than ever before. From study and social activities to friendships, travel and greater independence, John has developed a life that is busy, varied and very much his own.
For Val, choosing SILC has been the right decision.
Seeing John happy, supported and able to be himself has given Val confidence that they made the right choice for his future.
